Surprise mail!!!
We've been away for a few days, between Christmas and New Year. When my husband went to check the mail box yesterday this is what he found!!! Cheeky (and determined) Indian myna birds had built a nest and laid two eggs.. can you see the scratched open envelope as well!! Not only did they take over the letter box they were reading our mail too..... Up here in north Queensland the Indian Myna birds are a very annoying pest, so I had no hesitation in dumping the nest and eggs into the garden. We hosed out the box, I put a packet of napthalene flakes inside and closed the door. Thinking that would work to keep them out. How wrong I was!!! An hour or so later I could hear the birds again, so went to check, there was no trace of the napthalene packet and sticks and bits of paper had been returned to the letter box!!! This time I opened the packet of napthalene and sprinkled it onto the floor of the letter box.. that didn't work either.. so I have left the door of the letter box open.. luckily it's public holidays and there'll be no post for a few days.. I'm really hoping that by then the myna birds will have found a new nesting place. It does makes us wonder how many other people return from holidays with more than letters in their letter box!!!
Happy New Year... it's going to be a good one....

Oh what a wonderful story! And the photographic evidence to boot. Has really started my New Year with a giggle. I must show Charles. He used to have running battles with a pair of myna's in the carport rafters every year which went on all breeding season. You have to admit those pesky birds have personality - but reading your mail does overstep the mark, I agree.
that beats my cattle story and now i know who belongs to the broken eggs we see on the roads here, dropped right out of the sky - broken blue eggshells, sometimes with a dead bird inside. i hope you're problem is solved this time.....
